The Fuchs collection: networks, contacts and relations
The Volkskundemuseum Wien (VKMW) has a special status in this virtual gallery. We are the hosts for other institutions – museums, libraries and other collections – and are the first private museum to start collaborating with the Commission for Provenance Research. What object or collection was the Museum to select for participation in this project?
At a meeting of the weekly jour fixe, in which all kinds of suggestions were made, the enlarged research team decided that the curators of this virtual gallery should take responsibility for the ÖMV’s contribution.
And the curators went back to the beginning and chose the first restitution from the museum recommended by the Art Restitution Advisory Board.
This example shows the involvement of collections, objects and institutions in the Nazi looting and persecution, the guilt and greed, but also the attempts to deal adequately with the consequences. It is these attempts that shape the present-day attitude and method of working – not only in our museum.
